YEREVAN, OCTOBER 24, NOYAN TAPAN. A ceremony dedicated to the 15th
anniversary of the foundation of the permanent representation of the
UN in the country and the membership of Armenia in the UN was held
in the UN Office of Armenia on October 24, during which the solemn
ceremony of raising the United Nations flag took place.

As Consuelo Vidal, the United Nations Resident Coordinator of Armenia,
mentioned, since 1992 the UN has always supported Armenia by assisting
in the formation of a prosperous society, as well as in solving the
problems set in front of the country by the imperative need of the
newest times.

According to him, the UN in Armenia supports the social, economic,
and environmental protection spheres, in particular. In the words of
Consuelo Vidal, the prevention of social and economic unequality of
rights, the stimulation of the participation of citizens in democratic
processes are among the main goals of the UN in the republic. In
her words, irrespective of the fact that the economic development
of Armenia has had significant positive results, that development
has mainly limited itself with the city of Yerevan. In the words
of Consuelo Vidal, social-economic unequality and poverty are still
very considerable outside the capital, in regions and mainly in rural
communities. It was mentioned that irrespective of the fact that the
general poverty level in Armenia has decreased during the past ten
years, the continual development of the country is closely connected
with the solution of various issues of social-economic unequality in
the regions.
