NOMINATION OF RA CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR PRESIDENCY TO START FROM NOVEMBER 21

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 9, NOYAN TAPAN. The Central Electoral Commission
unanimously endorsed the schedule of the main events for the
preparation and holding of the RA presidential elections to be held
on February 19, 2008 in the November 9 sitting.
Thus, the candidates running for presidentcy are to submit their
nomination documents to the Central Electoral Commission between
November 21 up to December 6 by 18:00. The registration is envisaged
tobe held from December 31 up to January 20, 2008. The pre-electoral
campaign will be conducted from January 21 up to February 17 by 24:00.
The ballot will be held on February 19 starting from 08:00 up to
20:00. The Central Electoral Commission will ratify with the record
of proceedings the preliminary results of the elections and will
officially make them public through a live broadcast on the frequences
of the public radio and public TV on February 20 by 20:00. The final
results of the election will be made public by February 26.
According to the schedule, the accreditation of observers will be
carried out between November 9 and February 9, 2008. By November
19 TV and radio companies, irrespective of the form of ownership,
are to make public the price of each minute of ether to be given to
the candidates during the pre-electoral campaign.
It should be mentioned that any person, who is 35, who has been an
RA citizen and has lived in the Republic of Armenia for the past ten
years, as well as enjoys suffrage, can be nominated as a candidate
running for presidency. According to the Electoral Code in force,
the candidate running for presidency can be nominated by a party, a
bloc of parties or by an initiative group of citizens. It should also
be mentioned that at present the draft amendments of the Electoral
Code, which have already been adopted by the first reading, are in
circulation in the National Assembly. In case these draft amendments
are adopted by the second reading and completely in the near future,
the candidate of the RA President will be entitled to be nominated
only by a party or by the self-nomination order.
