THE CATHOLICOS COMPLETES HIS PONTIFICAL VISIT
His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians
completed his 5-week Pontifical Visit on Friday November 2 in Detroit, from
where he departed to Armenia. This hugely inspirational and unforgettable
visit – for both His Holiness and his flock – to the Eastern Diocese of the
Armenian Church of America took in 18 cities in 14 different states.
His Holiness was moved by the whole visit and shared his thoughts on the
visit to the Detroit parish, "I am leaving America and the Eastern Diocese’s
communities with the best impressions, taking them in my heart and in my
prayers. I am very happy with what I have seen and experienced on the shores
of this land. I know that your devotion and love towards the Church and the
Armenian identity, and your efforts to keep these values will ensure that
the Armenians will live here for centuries long. God bless you and your
devotion and love towards our identity and values, our Church and our
Motherland Hayastan our country."

HIS EMINENCE ARCHBISHOP KHAJAG BARSAMIAN ATTENDS MEETING IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian attended a meeting of the Council of Religious
Institutions of the Holy Land on Monday November 5, 2007 at the Pope John
Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian
attended as one of the invited members of a small group of American
religious leaders to meet with the Council for a full day of discussion.
‘Creating an Active Role for Religious Leaders in Bringing Peace to the Holy
Land’ was the theme of the day. The Reverend Father Hovsep Garabedian from
St. Mary’s Armenian Church in Washington, D.C. was also present.

MEETING OF CHURCH LEADERS OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCH OF NORTH AMERICA
The 3 Primates of the Armenian Church of North America – His Eminence
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian
Church of America, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the
Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America and His Eminence
Bishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Primate of the Canadian Diocese met today,
November 8, in order to discuss various issues.
Joining them will be the 3 Chairs of the Diocesan Council; Mr. Oscar
Tatosian from the Eastern Diocese, Barlow Der Mugrdechian from the Western
Diocese and Mr. Ara Boyajian from the Canadian Diocese. The meeting will
take place at the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) in New
York.

INSTALLATION SERVICE OF HIS EMINENCE ARCHBISHOP VICKEN AYKAZIAN
The installation service of the Diocesan Legate His Eminence Archbishop
Vicken Aykazian as President of the National council of Churches of Christ,
USA took place today, November 8 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Vartan Armenian
Cathedral, 630 Second Avenue, New York. An installation dinner will follow
in the Kavookjian Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.

NAGORNO-KARABAKH PRESIDENT TO VISIT THE DIOCESE
Bako Sahakyan, the recently elected president of Nagorno-Karabakh will be
welcomed at the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) on
Saturday November 10 at 2:30 p.m by His Eminence Archbishop Khajag
Barsamian and Mr. Garnik A. Nanagoulian, FAR’s Executive Director. President
Sahakyan is the third president of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

ARCHBISHOP KHAJAG BARSAMIAN TO PRESIDE OVER DIVINE LITURTY AT ST. GREGORY
THE ENLIGHTENER ARMENIAN CHURCH
His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the
Armenian Church of America (Eastern) will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at
St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains this Sunday,
November 11 at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Father Karekin Kasparian, Pastor,
will also serve on the altar. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian will present an
encyclical or Gontag and will ordain 6 acolytes. The encyclical will be
presented Mr. Krikor Pidedjian, a noted musician and musicologist, receiving
the St. Sahag and Mesrob medal for his many years of service and
contribution to Armenian music. Six young people will receive Minor Orders
of Acolytes, having participated in a rigorous program of preparation with
the Pastor.
A banquet honoring the newly ordained as well as all choir members, and in
particular, the recipient of the medal, will take place following church
services.

THE ARMENIAN CHURCH PARTICIPATES IN THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES GENERAL
ASSEMBLY
Archbishop Vicken Aykazian headed the Armenian Church delegation at the
National Council of Churches General Assembly (NCC) alongside
representatives from 36 Churches – representing 45 million people worldwide.
This annual assembly began on Sunday November 4 at the Sheraton Hotel in New
Jersey. Global concerns such as war, poverty, AIDS and Middle East peace
were the subjects discussed. The assembly ends today, Thursday 8 November.
The NCC Plenary Meeting with 350 people took place at the Kavookjian Hall at
the Diocese at 2:00 p.m. today, followed by Archbishop Vicken’s Installation
Service.
Accompanying Archbishop Vicken Aykazian were the Very Reverend Father Papken
Anoushian from St. Thomas Armenian Church in Tenafly NJ, the Very Reverend
Father Aren Jebejian from St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in
Chicago IL, Reverend Father Shnork Souin from St. Mary Armenian Church in
Livingston NJ, Father Vartan Kasparian from LA, Yeretsgin Arpi Kouzouian
>From Boston and Miss Maria Derderian from the Diocese. Archpriest Father
Vartan Kasparian, Pastor of St. Mary Armenian Church in Yettem, CA was also
present.

NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION
MEETING/REGIONAL TEACHERS’ WORKSHOP
For the fifth time since its reorganization in April 2006, the dynamic
Association comprising 14 Sunday School Superintendents and
Co-Superintendents of the New England Region met on November 5 to discuss
issues of mutual concern as well as do some very productive networking. DYE
Christian Education Coordinator Elise Antreassian shared Diocesan resources
and joined them in planning a workshop for junior and senior high teachers,
among other projects. The Meeting was hosted by Holy Trinity Sunday School
of Cambridge, MA, the site of a 3-hour regional Teachers Workshop sponsored
by the Christian Education division of the DYE earlier that same day. Topic:
"Creating a Successful Team Ministry."

LECTURE ON ARMENIAN & BYZANTINE ART AND ARCHITECTURE
St. Nersess Armenian Seminary invites you to join its students and faculty
as it hosts its second in a series of lectures on Armenian Sacred Art and
Architecture. Richard Schnieder, Visiting Professor of Liturgical Art at St.
Vladimir’s Seminary, and Associate Professor in History and Humanities at
York University in Toronto, will offer the lecture. Admission is free and a

ARMENIAN SCHOOL GUIDEBOOK
The newly published bi-lingual Armenian School Guidebook was presented to
the Diocesan Armenian school principals and teachers during their recent
symposium in New York. It was also made available to clergy whose parish has
an Armenian school. In addition to Armenian language teaching methodology,
the guidebook has age appropriate instructional information on heritage
learning, tips for new teachers and schools, classical Armenian orthography,
discipline, a list of learning resources as well as the by-laws of the
diocesan Armenian schools. The guidebook proposes to "bridge the gap between
what we teach and what our students will learn." said the Armenian studies
coordinator.

KHRIMIAN LYCEUM
The Khrimian Lyceum students performed a play about Khrimian Hayrig based on
memoirs by Avetik Issahakian during the Pontifical visit youth event. The
Lyceum will host writer Vehanoush Tekian this Saturday to speak about
literature and writing in the context of the creative writing classes added
to the curriculum. The students, graduates of Armenian schools, have already
published writing in the media and their yearbook. In October, they visited
the Armenian Radio Hour station at Seton Hall University in NJ with their
director and teachers. Their taped interview was broadcast by the station
director, Vartan Abdo. The group also met with Chris Zakian, the managing
editor of the Armenian Reporter who spoke to them about writing and
journalism. The Khrimian Lyceum in Massachusetts continues its monthly
sessions with guest speakers such as Tom Vartabedian and Alan Semerdjian.

FALL SEMESTER IN SESSION AT THE MESROB MASHDOTS INSTITUTE
The Diocese’s Mesrob Mashdots Armenian Language Institute’s fall semester
has 30 adults registered in the beginner, intermediate and the newly
established Armenian literature appreciation classes. Students meet
Wednesday evenings for fifteen sessions at the Diocesan Center and are
taught by Shakeh Kadehjian, Maro Partamian, Sirvart Arakelian and the
Institute’s director Gilda Buchakjian Kupelian. For more information on the

ACYOA SPONSORS REGIONAL CONFERENCE IN NEW ENGLAND
Creating an Armenian Christian home may be a challenge for today’s young
people, but the enthusiasm showed by the youth assembled at Holy Trinity
Church in Cambridge, MA last Saturday was a good indication that this lofty
goal is important to the next generation of Armenian families. Despite the
Nor’easter brewing outside, young adults from nine different parishes in the
Eastern Diocese assembled for the ACYOA’s New England regional conference,
"Creating an Armenian home in the 21st century."
Sessions focused on challenges in dating, romance, marriage, finance, and
more. "We chose this theme because we know young adults are interested in
interpersonal relationships and are beginning to think marriage and family,"
said Talin Hitik, Program Coordinator of the ACYOA Central Council. "We knew
it would be something they could all relate to."
On hand were several clergy members and Central Council members who guided
the participants in their thought-provoking discussions. The Midwest region
will host the next conference. It will take place on Saturday, December 8 at
St. Mesrob Church in Racine, Wisconsin. To register, contact
