MEETING OF OSCE MINSK GROUP CO-CHAIRS, VARTAN OSKANIAN AND ELMAR MAMEDYAROV HELD IN MADRID

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 1, NOYAN TAPAN. On the initiative of the OSCE
Chairam-in-Office, foreign minister of Spain Miguel Angel Moratinos,
the Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian met with the Azerbaijani
foreign minister Elmar Mamedyarov and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs
in Madrid. The OSCE chairman-in-office expressed his support for
negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh problem’s solution within the
framework of the Minsk Group and urged the sides to coninue active
negotaitions.
According to the RA MFA, Vartan Oskanian, who was participating in
the sitting of the Council of OSCE foreign ministers, on November
30 met with the President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline
Calmy-Rey, the Special Representative of the NATO Secretary-General
Robert Simmons, and the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic
Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Christian Strohal. During the
meeting with C. Strohal, the interlocutors discussed issues related
to the upcoming presidential elections in Armenia and the format of
the ODIHR observer mission’s participation in these elections. At
the meeting of V. Oskanian with the Romanian foreign minister Adrian
Ciorianu, the latter expressed a desire to visit Armenia. V. Oskanian
also met with the U.S. Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns, with
whom he discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and Armenian-Turkish
relations. The sides clarified their positions on the documents to
be adopted at the sitting of the Council of the OSCE foreign ministers.
