YEREVAN, DECEMBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. The non-registration of the
candidature of Raffi Hovhannisian in the 2008 presidential elections
was a forced step.

This statement was made by Serge Sargsian, the Prime Minister of the
Republic of Armenia, in response to the questions of journalists on
December 5. According to him, if the candidature of Raffi Hovhannisian
was registered and he took part in the forthcoming elections, those,
who would receive the trifling percent of the votes in the elections,
would blame the government for having illegally registered a candidate
and would demand to invalidate the elections.

"I am really sorry that there is a legislative prohibition in
connection with the participation of Raffi Hovhannisian in the
presidential elections, as I think he could play a positive role,"
the Prime Minister declared.

According to him, in case Raffi Hovhannisian took part in the
elections, the electoral processes would pass quietly and the people,
who hoped to take the second, third and other places, could go a
step back.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
