"Russian Railways" to Invest About $570 Mil in "Armenian Railway"

"RUSSIAN RAILWAYS" COMPANY INTENDS TO INVEST ABOUT 570 MILLION DOLLARS
IN "ARMENIAN RAILWAY"

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 27, NOYAN TAPAN. The concession manager of Armenian
Railway company will be announced on January 15, 2008. Only Russian
Railways company has submitted a bid for participation in the tender.
This company intends to invest 174.5 billion drams (about 570 million
USD) in 30 years. The RA minister of transport and communication
Andranik Manukian said at the December 27 press conference that the
company is going to invest 220 million dollars (of the indicated sum)
in the first five years of management and spend this money on repairs
of the system’s infrastructures and replenishment its rolling-stock.
Besides, according to the package submitted at the tender, if the
Abkhazian railway is opened by 2011, investments of Russian Railways
will reach 641 billion drams.

According to A. Manukian, in 2007 Armenian Railway has transported
cargos of nearly 2 million 970 thousand tons, which is more by 9% as
compared with 2006. This year 212 licences on transportation by
general-use passenger motor transport and 68 licences on passenger
transportation by taxi were granted.
