ISTANBUL, Turkey, Jan. 19 (UPI) — The one-year anniversary of the
death of Armenian journalist Hrant Dink in Istanbul drew thousands of
mourners to the Turkish city Saturday.
The BBC said thousands of people were in Istanbul to honor Dink, who
was gunned down after calling on his countrymen to demand justice for
the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War II.
Those demands caused Dink to become a hated figure in Turkey and on
Jan. 19, 2007, he was assassinated. Nineteen people have been charged
in his death and are now on trial in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, thousands joined Dink’s widow in remembering the late
journalist Saturday.
"We are at the pavement where they tried to clean his blood with
soap," Dink’s widow, Rakel, said.
"You are here for justice today. A scream for justice rises from your
silence."
