COMMISSIONER OF U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION VISITS ARMENIA TO FAMILIARIZE HIMSELF WITH PROJECTS ON CONSTRUCTION OF NEW NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, JANUARY 23, NOYAN TAPAN. The Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC) Dr. Peter Lyons paid a visit to Armenia
on January 21-22 in order to see the current state of the Metsamor
Nuclear Power Plant and to familiarize himself with the Armenian
projects on construction of a new nuclear power plant with the aim
of replacing the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant.

NT was informed by the U.S. embassy in Armenia that Dr. Lyons and
Armenian officials discussed the ways, by which the U.S. NRC may
help Armenia to create a regulated infrastructure necessary for
licensing the new nuclear power plant. During his visit, Dr. Lyons
met with officials of the RA energy ministry, the RA ministry of
foreign affairs, the RA ministry of environmental protection, and the
Armstateatomcontrol. He also visited the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant.
