The Philippine boxing scene is in for another high profile match as
our country’s very own Z "The Dream" Gorres goes toe to toe against
the sensational Armenian slugger Vic "The Raging Bull" Darchinyan
this February 2 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel. Titled "Now or Never",
the heavily-hyped event is set for an important prize: the right to
face the current IBF World Super Flyweight champion, Dmitri Kirilov,
for a title match.
"Now or Never", a promotion of Solar Sports in cooperation with ALA
Promotion, will begin at 6pm, Philippine time. Not to disappoint
Filipino boxing fans around the world, the event will also be "aired"
over the Internet in real time via the neTVision website
(). As more and more boxing enthusiasts
use their computer for entertainment, neTVision allows easy access to
the live fight for those who do not have cable TV (or to those whose
international cable licenses do not carry the fight).
Z Gorres is rapidly becoming one of the country’s finest boxers. In
his last battle, he fashioned out an 8th round TKO win against Eric
Ortiz – effectively showing the world his boxing ability. With a
record of 27 wins (15 by knockout) and only 2 losses, Gorres is
attributed with "great stamina and good footwork". His 12-round
battle against Fernando Montiel was well-perceived by the boxing
community and was a showcase of his in-ring talent – giving the world
a glimpse of things to come.
On the other end, the Armenian Vic Darchinyan is known as a heavy
puncher and is an absolute terror in the ring. He started his career
with a 28-0 record until he met his match against another Filipino
sensation, Nonito Donaire, earning him his first professional loss.
Even though reeling from the defeat, Darchinyan remains a formidable
opponent – 23 of his fights were won by knockouts. His upcoming
battle with Gorres will be a statement fight, a sweet revenge against
Filipino boxers if he wins.
The event will also feature the Philippines’ various boxing talents.
The undercards include Mark Jason Melliguen of Bacolod taking on Tia
Koswara of Indonesia; Romeo Jakosalem against William Kickitt of
Australia; and James Bacon of Mandaue City versus Diosdado Perez of
Manila. "Now or Never" will also hold matches for up-and-coming local
fighters: Rollen Del Castillo, Fabio Marfa, and Alejandro Belonguel
of Mandaue City; Ruel Cuizon of Manila; JV Tuazon of New Jersey, USA;
and Rey Villar of Sultan Kudarat.
Will Gorres reign supreme in this clash of boxing titans? Or will
"The Raging Bull" trample our local hero and regain his lost glory?
For both fighers, it’s now or never.
