LEVON TER-PETROSIAN: DEPUTY DEFENCE MINISTERS MANVEL GRIGORIAN AND GAGIK MELKONIAN STATED THAT THEY WILL NOT PERMIT ARMY TO INTERVENE INTO POLITICS

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 21, NOYAN TAPAN. "Yesterday I met with Deputy
Defence Minister Manvel Grigorian. At the moment Lieutenant-General
Manvel Grigorian and another Deputy Minister, Gagik Melkonian,
who has joined him, state that as army Deputy Ministers they stand
near their people and will support the candidate, who enjoys the
people’s confidence. They also stated that they will not permit the
army to intervene into politics. They consider themselves guarantors
of people’s security." RA presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrosian
stated at the rally held on February 21 in Liberty Square of Yerevan.
Stepan Demirchian, the Chairman of the People’s Party of Armenia,
in his turn, said that yesterday some foreign TV correspondents asked
him what L. Ter-Petrosian’s supporters will do if the international
observers’ estimations are mild. "I told them that it is the people,
which is to give an estimation. There should be no observers in
this struggle. Those having seized the power should leave," the PPA
Chairman said.
