State Duma blames opposition for unrest in Yerevan

MOSCOW March 6

The situation in Armenia following the presidential election was
discussed by the State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs and Contacts
with Compatriots, Committee head Alexei Ostrovsky of the Liberal
Democratic Party faction said on Thursday.

The discussion also involved diplomats and members of the Public
Chamber, he told the press.

"The first ting is, that we think the Armenian leadership and the
incumbent president had every right to declare a state of emergency
in Yerevan in order to guarantee citizens’ security [amid massive
protest rallies staged by the opposition]," Ostrovsky said after the
meeting.

"The blame for the deaths suffered rests entirely with the opposition
leaders, who, for the sake of their political goals, ventured to use
human potential. The situation is getting back to normal in Yerevan,
which is due to the Armenian leadership’s wisdom," Ostrovsky said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
