NATO concerned by escalation on the Armenian-Azeri front

BAKU March 7

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is concerned by the
escalation of the situation in the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict zone,
said NATO Secretary General’s special representative in South
Caucasus Robert Simmons.

We are very concerned by the recent breach of the cease-fire in the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, which has become a major incident in
the region, Simmons told journalists at the 68th Rose-Roth seminar of
the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Baku.

Hopefully, such incidents will not happen again and will not hurt the
talks with the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe) Minsk Group [of conflict mediators], he said.

I will discuss this problem with both Azeri and Armenian leaders, he
said.

Regarding the escalation in the domestic situation in Armenia,
Simmons said they are concerned and are watching events in the
country very closely.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
