The main issue of the July 1 sitting of the NA ad hoc commission on
study of the March 1-2 events in Yerevan and their reasons was to
establish the order of applying to official bodies with questions. The
range of the questions is to be clarified at the working consultation
to be convened on July 4.

Before that, the members of the commission and representatives
of extra-parliamentary forces should present their proposals in a
written form.

The commission also expects similar proposals from human rights NGOs
for the purpose of answering to questions of as wide layers of society
as possible on the March 1-2 events.

It should be mentioned that according to the decision of NA to
create an ad hoc commission, when carrying out the tasks set before
it the commission has a right not only to apply to state and local
self-government bodies with questions to receive needed information,
but also to invite officials and to receive explanations from them
over issues discussed in the commission.

RA Ombudsman Armen Hovhannisian, Chairman of the United Labor Party
Gurgen Arsenian, and former RA presidential candidate, Chairman of the
National Consent Party Aram Haroutiunian for the first time took part
in commission’s proceedings. Like the previous sitting, representatives
of former presidential candidate, Chairman of the National Democratic
Union Vazgen Manukian and of the National Unity party were present.

According to Samvel Nikoyan, the Chairman of the ad hoc commission,
the Secretary of the RPA faction, first RA President Levon
Ter-Petrosian has not officially responded yet to the proposal to
send his representative and an expert to take part in commission’s
proceedings with the right of consultation vote. The proposal made
to the Zharangutiun (Heritage) faction to nominate two members to
the commission has not received a response, either.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
