YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 9, NOYAN TAPAN. In the words of the first secretary
of the central committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA) Ruben
Tovmasian, by building an underground parking in Liberty Square,
the authorities try to "defile the area of the National Academic
Theatre of Opera and Ballet", which is a "vandalism" with respect
to the history of the Armenian people. "The Opera’s building was
constructed by the design of the architect Tamanian in 1935, it won
the highest awards in Paris, whereas today it has been decided to use
its area in the interests of oligarchs," R. Tovmasian said during a
talk with NT correspondent, expressing confidence that rich people
rather than art workers or those who have made a great contribution
for the nation will park their cars there. In his words, the only
idea that during a performance, Jeeps and other foreign cars will
drive in and out of the undeground parking with loud honks is a shame.

The leader of the CPA spoke about the recent cases of violence in
Armenia’s internal political life: the burning of headquarters of a
candidate for the post of a district head and the stabbing case on the
day of the elections to local self-government bodies. In his opinion,
such phenomena will exist as long as the current regime rules the
country. According to him, violence, oppressing people and treating
them as slaves are the pillars of the current social system.
