ARMENIA ASSUMED BSEC CHAIRMANSHIP

On October 23 the 19th meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the member
states of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation took
place in Tirana.

The agenda of the sitting of the Council of Foreign Ministers included
issues connected with the deepening of economic cooperation between
Black Sea countries, furthering the EU-BSEC cooperation, raising the
efficiency of the organization’s activity.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia, Edward Nalbandian, made a speech at
the meeting. The Armenian Foreign Minister noted that despite the
success achieved by the organization, BSEC needs reforms to raise
its effectiveness, and the member states should make efforts in
this direction.

Presenting the priorities of Armenia’s chairmanship of BSEC, Edward
Nalbandian pointed to the following directions: development of mutually
beneficial cooperation between BSEC and international organizations,
fostering the cooperation in the field of energy, development of
regional transport and communication infrastructures and deepening
of cooperation in the field of nature protection.

Following the ministerial meeting the Foreign Minister of Albania
Lulzim Basha officially handed over the BSEC chairmanship to the
Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian. The official ceremony
was followed by the joint press conference of the two FMs and the
Secretary General of BSEC Leonidas Chrisanthopoulos.

Armenia will preside over the Black Sea Economic Cooperation
Organization by the end of April, 2009.
