Armenian Police expects growth of criminality level in view of
financial crisis

ArmInfo. Growth of the number of crimes in Yerevan in 2008 has been
fixed, Head of the Yerevan municipal department of the Police,
Major-General Nerses Nazaryan said at a press-conference today.

According to him, 4816 crimes were registered in Yerevan in 2008, that
makes up 53% of the total number of crimes. The crimes against a
property, personality, smash-and- grab raids, swindling increased. As
N. Nazaryan said, increase of the criminality level is not a surprise
for the law machinery. Further growth of criminality is expected in
view of the economic crisis.

Total of 172 fire-arms, including 35 automatic rifles and 2
machine-guns were confiscated in 2008. 52 crimes against foreigners
were registered, and their major part – against the Iranian citizens.
N. Nazaryan especially emphasized that despite growth of criminality,
the operative situation in the capital is under full control.
