The opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), led by ex-President
Levon Ter-Petrosian, sees the upcoming mayoral elections in Yerevan
as a seconds round in the presidential elections.

"For us these elections are not just mayoral elections. Taking
Yerevan’s political and economic weight into account, these elections
are seen as an opportunity to change the current despotic regime. We
consider these elections as a second round in the presidential
elections, if you want," ANC spokesman Levon Zurabian told journalists
on Monday.

The nomination of ex-President Levon Ter-Petrosian for Yerevan mayor
is a "political message sent to the public," he said.

The ANC’s political council on Sunday put Ter-Petrosian on top of
the ANC ticket for Yerevan mayoral elections due on May 31.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
