GEVORG POGHOSIAN: IN YEREVAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS ELECTIONS BOTH RPA AND ANC CAN RECEIVE MORE THAN 40% VOTES

YEREVAN, APRIL 1, NOYAN TAPAN. Both the Republican Party of Armenia
(RPA) and the Armenian National Congress (ANC) are able to receive
more than 40% votes in Yerevan Council of Elders elections to be held
on May 31.
Sociologist Gevorg Poghosian predicted at the April 1 press
conference. In response to the question of whether the rating of Levon
Ter-Petrosian receiving 22% votes in the 2008 presidential elections
has increased at present G. Poghosian said that in 2008 first President
L. Ter-Petrosian competed with current President Serzh Sargsyan, while
now his rival is former Kentron community prefect Gagik Beglarian.
Besides, as the sociologist stressed, the radical opposition has
a possibility of receiving 40% votes, as the hard home political
atmosphere in the country has not changed in the past year. "Distrust
in the authorities has deepened, the criminal elements have become
active, law enforcers are not able to prevent their activity, thus
the power has weakened," G. Poghosian said. And, according to him, as
the power is presented to society by the Republican Party of Armenia,
the rating of the very RPA falls.
G. Poghosian said that L. Ter-Petrosian’s nomination to Mayor’s
post will make the election campaign interesting. However, as he
added, he would like the May 31 elections not to be like the 2008
presidential elections and the post-electoral events not to recur. "I
would like this time the elections not to be politicized and not
to be criminalized, society not to split, no conflicts to happen,"
the sociologist said.
