ZHIRAYR SEFILIAN: WE HAVE PROBLEM OF TURNING NEGOTIATIONS PROCESS TO A NEW WAY BY 180 DEGREES

The Miatsum people’s initiative organized a picket in front of the RA
Foreign Ministry building on April 22. As initiative member, Commander
of Shoushi special battalion Zhirayr Sefilian said in his interview to
journalists, pickets are aimed at preventing the "traitorous process"
in the Nagorno Karabakh issue and will continue until RA Foreign
Minister Edward Nalbandian agrees to meet with the initiative members.

Z. Sefilian said that very dangerous developments are observed in the
issue of Nagorno Karabakh settlement. "In essence, nothing has been
changed in the Minsk Group proposals: just because of our feebleness
all processes, Armenian-Turkish relations or Nagorno Karabakh problem,
are connected with each other today, and it is the most dangerous
thing," the former freedom-fighter said. According to Z. Sefilian,
we have a problem of turning the negotiations process to a new way
by 180 degrees.

Initiative member, film director Tigran Khzmalian emphasized that the
authorities put their trust in foreigners in national issues of vital
importance, in particular, the Nagorno Karabakh issue. "These are
indeed senseless efforts of the level of ping-pong or football having
nothing in common with serious and national deep policy," he said.

According to him, the initiative members have gathered to say to
Foreign Ministry officials, foreign diplomats, especially to OSCE
Minsk Group Co-chairs being in Yerevan at present that there are
people in Armenia, who will do their best to prevent undesirable
and anti-popular developments. According to T. Khzmalian, a meeting
between the Miatsum initiative’s delegation and Foreign Minister
does not take place for months running, and it once more confirms
that the authorities and foreign policy are estranged from society.

According to T. Khzmalian, an issue of national importance should not
be a subject of foreign diplomats’ bargaining. "We are concerned with
anti-national approaches, bargainings, dilettante diplomacy, because
the people does not imagine the danger well, especially in connection
with the liberated territories. Now it is especially dangerous that
in foreign political sphere big powers launch new developments in
the South Caucasus, and any new development can bring a result very
unfavorable for us," he said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
