US secretary of state, Armenian minister discuss ties
Yerevan, 6 May: Armenian Foreign Minister Edvard Nalbandyan discussed
in Washington issues of Armenian-Turkish relations and Nagornyy
Karabakh conflict settlement with US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton and the US president’s national security adviser James Jones.
At the meeting with Nalbandyan, which took place on 5 May, Clinton
stated the USA’s interest in expanding relations with Armenia and said
that the administration of President Barack Obama was fully determined
to expand relations between the two countries, the press service of
the [Armenian] Foreign Ministry told Mediamax today. The Armenian
foreign minister noted the importance of deepening relations with the
USA and spoke about official Yerevan’s readiness to develop and expand
the "friendly partnership" with Washington.
Clinton described as "historical" the joint statement made by the
Armenian and Turkish foreign ministries on 22 April and confirmed the
USA’s readiness to facilitate the normalization of relations between
Armenia and Turkey in any possible way.
The foreign ministers of both countries also discussed the forthcoming
meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents that will be
held in Prague on 7 May. Clinton said that the USA, as a co-chair
country of the OSCE Minsk Group, will continue to render full
assistance to the settlement process.
Armenian-Turkish relations and Karabakh conflict settlement were also
discussed at the meeting held between Nalbandyan and Jones. The US
president’s adviser stated support for the efforts of the Armenian
leadership to normalize relations with Turkey.
