PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA MEETS US ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR EUROPEAN AND EURASIAN AFFAIRS

President Serzh Sargsyan today received US Assistant Secretary for
European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon, President’s Press Office
reported.

The President congratulated the newly appointed official of the US
Administration, noting that his visit provided a good opportunity for
speaking about the current state and the perspectives of development
of the Armenian-American relations.

According to President Sargsyan, Armenia attaches great importance
to the deepening of relations with the United States and appreciates
the efforts of the US Administration towards the development of our
country’s economy, reinforcement of democracy and establishment of
stability in the region.

Assistant Secretary Gordon noted that he assumed office two weeks ago
and started his first foreign visit from Armenia. According to him,
the American side attaches importance to the expansion of cooperation
with Armenia and closely watches the regional developments.

President Sargsyan and Assistant Secretary Gordon discussed the process
of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations. Noting that this is
a historic opportunity and the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish
relations derives from the interests of Armenia, Turkey and the
region, as a whole, Philip Gordon reconfirmed the full support of
the US Administration for the steps ta ken in that direction.

The parties exchanged views on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

President Sargsyan briefly presented the history of the issue and the
stance of official Yerevan. The President of Armenia stressed once
again that our country was committed to the peaceful settlement of
the conflict and was ready to continue the talks on the basis of the
Madrid Proposals.

During the meeting reference was made to issues connected with the
Millennium Challenge Programme.
