YEREVAN, JULY 31, NOYAN TAPAN. Since 2008, the EU’s GSP+ system – the
additional preferences to the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)
has allowed Armenia and a number of other countries to export about
6,400 types of commodity to the EU market at zero or considerably
reduced customs duties. RA Deputy Minister of Economy Vahe Danelian
stated this at the July 31 working meeting held within the framework
of the EU’s Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument
Program. According to him, GPS+ gives reductions of customs duties
for such commodities as cigarettes (reductions of up to 52%), natural
juices (30%), fruit (20%), vegetables (14%), fish products (20%),
and honey (17%). Thus the reductions will contribute to a growth of
the country’s exports.

The deputy minister said that the main purpose of the meeting was to
inform small and medium business reprsentatives about the GSP+.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
