ArmInfo. Government assistance to cattle breeding in Armenia will make
the country less vulnerable to the imported poor-quality meat, says
Armen Poghosyan, Chairman of the Association of Consumers of Armenia.

On August 19 the government hosted discussions on the results of the
visit by the official delegation of Armenia to India. The delegation
got first hand view of the buffalo meat imported from India for
production of sausages in Armenia. The visited registered high
inconformity of the buffalo meat with quality standards. A. Poghosyan
was surprised that representatives of the Food Safety and Veterinary
Department of the Agricultural Ministry did not express their opinion
during the above discussions. He is sure that government’s support to
farming economies through subsidies, preferential loans and methodical
assistance would be more effective solution to the problem. If the
government introduces up- to-date methods of cattle production and
make it competitive, local producers of meat-products will import
less low-quality and cheap meat, Pogosyan says.

Statistical data say that in 1980s cattle production in Armenia was
little more than 770,000, in 2005 – 565.8 thousand, and in 20078 –
629.1 thousand.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
