After Serge Sargsyan assumed the office of the president of Armenia,
the Armenian second president Robert Kocharyan used to participate in
different events accompanying Serge Sargsyan. He often gave interviews
giving formal answers to the accusations in his address during Levon
Ter-Petrosyan’s rallies of the opposition but his answers were mainly
directed to Serge Sargsyan.

Robert Kocharyan was trying to show that regardless he had left his
office but he still kept the levers of the government. But it lasted
for a short time and after, Robert Kocharyan started not to appear
at the events with the participation of the leadership and Serge
Sargsyan and he did not hold interviews either. Moreover, Robert
Kocharyan started to appear on the media only in the context with
his hunting trips or other personal interests. The impression was
as if Serge Sargsyan wanted to show that he had eliminated Robert
Kocharyan’s influence on the governmental system.

Television remembered about Robert Kocharyan when on August 31 he
celebrated his 55th anniversary. A part of the TV channels was telling
Robert Kocharyan’s biography in this connection and about the years
of his tenure naturally under the positive light according to the
best traditions. All this is possible to have aroused excitement in
Robert Kocharyan because suddenly he decided to go and to participate
in events dedicated to the Karabakh Independence Day standing near
the leadership and Serge Sargsyan.

But maybe not the TV reports but the Armenian-Turkish protocols
appeared on the foreign ministry website during the TV reports excited
Robert Kocharyan. Anyway, the fact is that Robert Kocharyan who left
the events of the leadership is coming back. But it is symbolic that
Robert Kocharyan came back just when very dynamic and hot developments
are taking place in the Armenian and Turkish relations which will
touch upon the Karabakh conflict too.

What does Robert Kocharyan want to say with his return? Does he support
Serge Sargsyan’s policy with this action? Or he comes to say that
no one has to worry about this policy as until he exists everything
will be done the way he wants. And he, as he mentioned one year ago,
does not want Gul to "come" to Armenia. Though Robert Kocharyan is not
ruled out to have changed his mind. Anyway, his return does not create
many possibilities to make judgments in this connection and Robert
Kocharyan had better restart holding interviews to clarify his aims.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
