On November 6 the Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Hovik
Abrahamyan received NATO Secretary General’s Representative for the
South Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons.

Greeting the guest, the President of the National Assembly attached
importance to the cooperation with NATO and expressed the willingness
of the Armenian side to deepen it in the future.

The interlocutors agreed that the cooperation should be transparent
and understandable to the Armenian public. In this context they
discussed the initiatives of the Armenian National Assembly within
the framework of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, as well as the
reforms in the direction of ensuring civil control of the armed
forces and the cooperation programs in the sphere of the management
of emergency situations.

The interlocutors also dwelt on issues of regional security.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
