YEREVAN, DECEMBER 18, NOYAN TAPAN. Hayk Hakobian, an eleventh grader of
the physico-mathematical school attached to Yerevan State University,
and Hayk Stepanian, a pupil of Quantum college, won gold medals at the
International OLympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics held in the city
of Hangzhou, China on November 8-16. Teacher Marietta Gyulzadian, an
employee of the Byurakan Observatory, announced this at the December
17 press conference, adding that participants from Russia, China
and India also received gold medals. "It is not for the first time
that our children return from international contests with prizes,
but it is for the first time that we voice this fact," she stated.

H. Hakobian in his turn said that in big countries, the lessons for
participants in such contests are conducted not in classrooms but in
observatories, thus allowing them greatly improve their knowledge.

According to H. Stepanian, by attending a planetarium in China, the
pupils receive the opportunity to grasp the secrets of astrophysics.

He said Armenia has several experts in astrophysics, whereas in China
there are thousands of experts and they use advanced technologies,
while Armenian scientists are deprived of this opportunity.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
