It is already been several years since February 19, the birthday of
famous Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan, is celebrated in Armenia as
the day of giving books as presents.

"I consider this holiday to be one of our achievements. Some traditions
have already been established in our society," said Levon Ananyan,
President of the Writer’s Union of Armenia.

He also recalled that last year, thanks to the support of RA Ministry
of Culture, some 10,000 books were distributed in Armenia’s marzes
(provinces) and provided to a few universities.

"We must continue this tradition," said Ananyan, adding that more
than 100 writers will take part in this year’s celebration.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
