Undertime opening of Upper Lars checkpoint on Russia-Georgia border
was at Armenian authorities’ request, said Georgian Deputy Foreign
Minister Nino Kalanadze on March 1.

According to her, it will not jeopardize Georgia’s security in any way.

"Chance of provocations from Russian side is always there, but Georgian
authorities will secure both habitants of adjacent regions and those
passing the checkpoint," Kalanadze declared.

Despite the relaxed border policy Georgian side takes all measures
to prevent any provocations, she said.

"I assure that from safety viewpoint we will carry out a tough policy",
Kalanadze added.

As NEWS.am reported earlier, on March 1, 2010 after a lapse of three
years the Upper Lars checkpoint on Russia-Georgia border reopened.

The agreement was reached at the Russian-Georgian experts’ meetings in
Yerevan and Kazbegi with the participation of Swiss embassy employees
and confirmed by Russian and Georgian Foreign offices’ notes.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
