ArmInfo. The Turkish government strongly condemns the decision of the
Swedish Parliament, which has adopted the resolution recognizing the
Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

Anadolu news agency quotes the Office of the Prime Minister of the
Republic of Turkey as saying: "We deeply regret the adoption of a
resolution by the Parliament of Sweden pertaining to the claim that
certain peoples were subjected to genocide during the final period of
the Ottoman Empire. We strongly condemn this resolution. Our nation
and Government reject this unsubstantiated resolution replete with
immense errors. It is obvious that the resolution was adopted with
certain political calculations in view of the upcoming elections to
be held in Sweden in September 2010. This resolution adopted with
domestic political motives does not befit Turkey-Sweden relations and
the close cooperation and friendship between our peoples". Turkey’s
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement on his homepage
on Thursday that he was cancelling a planned trip to Sweden on March
17th in response to the parliament’s decision.

For his part, Turkish Minister of State and Chief Negotiator in EU
Accession Egemen Bagis said that Turkey is disappointed with the
Swedish Parliament’s affirmation of the Armenian claims concerning
the tragic events of 1915. He said that the Swedish parliament
distorted the history with arguments, which are far from being
true. He stressed that politicians should look forward, not back,
Turkey is ready to confront its past and it needs no tribunes with
foreign parliamentarians for that.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
