Azerbaijani MP: Syria’s mediation in Armenian-Turkey negotiations will
not bring results

`Any initiative, offering mediation deserves attention and is
commendable,’ Member of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Azay
Guliyev said.
He was commenting on Syria’s possible mediation in the Armenian-Turkey
negotiations.
"I think, in this case, this mediation will not bring fruits as
Armenia is not an independent state. Armenia depends on its Diaspora
and Russia. Therefore, there will be no progress in negotiations with
Ankara until they receive an order from outside,’ the MP said.
`It is worth noting that this desire was expressed in Damascus, where
Armenia initiated a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. Definitely, such
statements are just PR, no more. Therefore, in response to the Foreign
Ministry of Azerbaijan noted that Baku is ready to sign such an
agreement, but only after the liberation of Armenian-occupied
territories of Azerbaijan," the MP said.
Asked whether Syria has earned the status of an impartial mediator in
the talks, like Switzerland, the MP said "Of course, Syria can not
claim to be a neutral mediator in the Armenian-Turkish negotiations
like Switzerland. Obviously, it was not Bern to initiated
rapprochement between Yerevan and Ankara. It was initiated by the U.S.
and the EU.’
‘But this is not the main point. For example, we also hear calls for
direct talks with Yerevan without intermediaries. But even in this
regard the problem is that Armenia is dependent on external forces,
and cannot independently make important decisions," MP Guliyev added.
