In the course of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Turkey,
Armenia-Turkey reconciliation will be in focus, TRT reports.
According to Turkish media, Turkey’s full membership to EU will be
also discussed during her Ankara and Istanbul meetings. However, on
the threshold of the visit Merkel insisted on privileged partnership
instead of full membership.
She also opposed Turkish Premier Erdogan’s initiative to open Turkish
lycee in Germany. Replying to Chancellor’s statement, Erdogan said,
"Merkel does not want a Turkish lycee in Germany. I will set out my
position on the matter. There is a German lycee in Turkey and they
also intend to establish a university. We allocate them an area in
Beykoz district. I do not understand why they dislike Turkey to that
extent. I did not expect such an attitude from Merkel."
Visa-free regime between Ankara and Berlin is a topical issue as well.
Earlier, Merkel said "first let’s implement the repatriation agreement
and then we’ll talk about the visa issue."
Struggle against terrorism, Cyprus dispute, Iraq, Afghanistan and
Iran’s nuke program will be also discussed.
