Yerevan State Language Inspectorate has encountered in February more
than 500 billboards with linguistic mistakes. The amount of billboards
with foreign letters on Mashtots avenue in downtown Yerevan is more
than 50, Sergo Yeritsyan, the acting officer of the Head of State
Language Inspectorate, said at a press conference today.

"Given the long-lasting delays in court proceedings, we need at least
10 years to correct these mistakes,"- said Yeritsyan, adding that the
Inspectorate can only record those mistakes, but it is not authorized
to transfer the issue to the legislative field.

"Legislative shortcomings do not allow to correct the mistakes through
judicial measures," noticed Yeritsyan.

The inspectorate is designing a "Law on Inspectoral Supervision". In
Yeritsyan’s words that law will secure the efficiency of inspectorate’s
work. The bill will be brought to a vote in Parliament in autumn.

"That bill may become a subject of serious conflicts"- stated
Yeritsyan.

The main obstacle for the Inspectorate’s activity is the "Law on
Advertisement," especially the Article 5 of the same law which fixes
numerous exceptions.

Among 500 companies with which the Isnpectorate has found violations
are NOKIA, Grand Candy, CITY etc.

Yeritsyan said that "there are no problems with persons, there are
legislative problems."He is also sure that the problems related to
violations of the language norms will be solved as soon as the new
law is adopted.
