ONE NAEVE QUESTION

The latest statement of the Armenian National Congress calls
for national union, with a reservation of releasing the political
prisoners. Congress had made appeals to dialogue before too. At the
same time, Congress refuted the proposals of Heritage and other
initiatives to discuss national issues. The other angles of the
Armenian political triangle do not accept it either.
The Armenian political triangle composed of the power-Congress-ARF
turns into an obstacle for the development of the country. Development
is possible only in case forces of influence are ready to sacrifice
their disagreements. In Armenia, no one seems to be ready for it. For
already 20 years, Armenia has been living in the atmosphere of hatred
between the team of the first president and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun,
and the ruling coalition is skillfully getting use of it quite.
Hatred appeared just when the independent Republic of Armenia was
established: deep disagreements were formed between Levon Ter-Petrosyan
and the Dashnak team, which had great influence then.
Experts consider it a fight for the power. The first president
succeeded in ousting the ARF from the power in Armenia and Karabakh.
However, in their fight neither the one nor the other party avoided
the steps that affect the course of military action, the social
situation of the people. This was followed by repression, then –
return of the ARF to power, when there was no Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
Currently, the first president and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun are
opposition. Factually, they should have many layers of cooperation. It
is comprehensible that the positions of the liberal Levon Ter-Petrosyan
and the social-revolutionary Dashnaktsutyun are contradictory. But such
antagonism of stances did not hinder many forces to join the Congress,
just like ARF cooperated with many liberal forces. This means that
the problem does not consist in political disagreements. Moreover,
neither ARF nor the first president ever called the distinct reasons
for their disagreement in these 20 years.
What are the reasons that do not allow them to sit around one table to
discuss the most urgent issues? I would like to ask a naïve question –
why do they hate each other so much? And how would everything go if
the sides managed to overcome their hatred towards each other?
