Azerbaijani parliament A group of Swiss parliamentarians have
visited Azerbaijan`s parliament where they met members of the
Azerbaijan-Switzerland working group.

Head of the group, deputy chairwoman of the parliament Bahar Muradova
informed the Swiss MPs about the Azerbaijani legislative body`s
activity and ongoing reforms in the country.

Muradova said Azerbaijan is a ‘leader country’ in the region for its
economic successes, adding it experienced global financial crises
with a little damage.

Azerbaijan can set an example to other countries for human rights
records, freedom of speech and tolerance, Muradova said.

Speaking about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and
Azerbaijan, the vice-speaker stated that the problem impedes the
development of not only the country, but also the whole region. She
said ‘the conflict is a threat to security of the region as well’.

Muradova noted that her country is interested in peaceful settlement
of the conflict.

Members of the working group, including Asef Hajiyev, Azay Guliyev,
Govhar Bakshaliyeva and Ali Masimli informed the Swiss MPs about
development of science and education as well as the role of
non-governmental organizations in advancing civil society in the
country.

Chairwoman of Switzerland-Azerbaijan Parliament friendship group
Ms Christine Egerszegi-Obrist said Switzerland is interested in
cooperation with ‘rapidly developing Azerbaijan’.

Egerszegi-Obrist said the aim of the visit is to expand ties not only
between parliaments but also in all fields.

She said after a visit of Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev to
Switzerland last year, Swiss businessmen show much more interest
in Azerbaijan.

The Chairwoman of Switzerland-Azerbaijan Parliament friendship group
said her country was concerned about the delay in the resolution of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

‘All people must live in peace. We support Azerbaijan`s position on
the settlement of the problem. Although it is difficult, but we think
peaceful settlement of the conflict is possible,’ she said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
