"Consumers" Of Trafficking Should Be Criminally Punished

"CONSUMERS" OF TRAFFICKING SHOULD BE CRIMINALLY PUNISHED

A panel-discussion got underway today on "Criminal justice
counteraction against human trafficking: links with transnational
organized crime" theme, organized by UN Public Information Department,
International Organization of Migration and Armenian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs.

Dafina Gercheeva, UN coordinator to Armenia said the mission of the
discussion is to inform public about those activities being done in
Armenia to persist the crime.

The head of Police department against trafficking Tigran Petrosyan
said according to statistical data trafficking toll in transborder
regions reduce.

"I think, the improvement is due the punishment used against the
trafficking dealers," Police official said adding that they are jailed
up to 7 years 8 months.

"In 2009 10 people were accused to committing the crime. The basic
tool of trafficking is UN convention against transnational organized
crime, as well as the CE correspondent convention. We try to define the
borders of trafficking based on those two conventions," he said. s
T. Petrosyan said they highly recommend to define a criminally
punishable act for the "consumers".
