YEREVAN, MAY 18, NOYAN TAPAN. All countries recognize the territorial
integrity of states as a basic principle of the international law. At
the same time, the United States is committed to working with both
Yerevan and Baku to seek an equitable resolution of the Karabakh
problem based on this and other relevant principles. John Evans,
the USA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the RA stated
this in the interview given to “Yerkir” (Country) web-site, replying
the question if “the statements made by the USA State Department as
well as other countries that they recognize the territorial integrity
of Azerbaijan hinder the settlement of the Karabakg conflict and
encouriging Azerbaijani uncompromising position.” “The settlement, of
course, will require considerable compromises from both parties,” the
Ambassador emphasized. According to him, the international community
is not inclined to impose solutions but is ready to assist any just
and reseonable solution reached by the two sides. “The US Government
encourages efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group which are aimed to settle
the problem in a peaceful variant, admissible for both sides. A lasting
settlement will help foster security and economic progress for all
parties. We encourage the settlement of relations between Armenia
and Turkey and opening the borders as well,” Ambassador Evans stated.
