After removal of the boutiques from Mashtots Park green activists
intend to tackle the mining industry.
Activist Gor Hakobyan said in a press conference on Friday that
the green activists will focus on conformity of the exploitation
of deposits to the environmental legislation. Among priorities are
Teghout, Kajaran and Jermuk. “Nature protection issues are directly
connected with the national security. One should not forget that
serious environmental problems endanger the people’s health,” he said.
The country has faced quite serious environmental problems. Suffice
it to say that there are 15 tailing dumps in the country that cause
tangible damage to environment and health of the people. Despite that,
the government still issues licenses for use of minerals ignoring
development of such spheres as tourism and agriculture.
Environmentalists say that Armenia may face an environmental migration
unless the alarming issues of the mining industry are resolved.
The local population suffers from mining activity, first of all. For
instance, in the Syunik community near Artsvanik tailing dump and
Shahumyan deposit, mercury content in the soil exceeds the maximum
permitted concentration dozens of times. The fruits and vegetables
grown there are dangerous for health.
