YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) – Forty-five Armenian troops returned Wednesday
from a six-month tour of duty in Iraq, the first contingent from this
former Soviet nation to have served in the U.S.-led coalition.
The detachment included a squad of 30 drivers, 10 sappers, three
doctors and three officers, one of whom stayed behind in Iraq for a
second six-month mission under Polish command.
“We are proud that our soldiers carried out their mission with honor
and returned to their homeland,” said Deputy Defense Minister Artur
Agabekyan at a welcome ceremony.
Armenia on July 10 sent a second contingent of troops to serve in Iraq,
who were to spend two weeks in Kuwait before assuming duty in Iraq.
