Azerbaijan broadcaster launches Armenian-language programs

Aug 21, 2005

Public TV and Radio (PTR), the new public broadcaster in Azerbaijan,
has announced plans to broadcast Armenian-language programs,
BakuToday.net reported.

This is the first time such programs have been made available to the
country’s Armenian population since Azerbaijan’s independence from
the Soviet Union.

`We will prepare these programs to keep the Azerbaijani citizens of
Armenian origin living in Karabakh informed about the processes taken
place in the country and call on them to peaceful coexistence in the
composition of Azerbaijan,’ said Ismayil Omarov, PTR’s director
general.

About 119,000 Armenians live in Azerbaijan. Most of these Armenians
live in Nagorno-Karabakh – a breakaway republic supported by the
Armenian government.
