YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 26, NOYAN TAPAN. Having a faction at the National
Assembly is not end in itsef for the National Democratic Party
(NDP) but a mean for solving important issues. NDP Chairman Shavarsh
Kocharian stated about it at the 7th regular congress of the party
on February 25. In his words, it is already late to expect formation
of big opposing alliances, but opposing forces must do everything
possible to control the parliamentary elections to be held on May
12. According to Sh.Kocharian’s estimation, the Armenian opposition
has never been "so enfeebled and dispersed." As it was mentioned
in the statement adopted by the congress, "the process of the
constitutional amendments showed that the power is end in itself for
the majority of the parties involved in the "Ardaroutiun" (Justice)
alliance. In Sh.Kocharian’s opinion, the opposition’s wrong policy
gave possibility to the authorities to falsify the results of the
2005 referendum without serious efforts. As a result, in his words,
"we got more despaired people, opposition with more weekened positions
and more unbridled regime." The NDP congress made a decision to involve
a number of representatives of the "Havatarmutiun" (faithfulness)
civil initiative in the proportional list of the May 12 elections.
