The Prime Minister of Armenia, Andranik Margarian, has died of a
heart attack, the President’s office said.

"Margarian died suddenly at his home today in the 56th year of his
life as a result of a heart attack… President Robert Kocharian has
called an emergency government meeting," the statement said.

Margarian had served as the Prime Minister of Armenia since the
President appointed him on May 12, 2000.

He succeeded the Sarkisyan brothers; Vazgen Sargsyan, who was
murdered during the Armenian parliament shooting on October 27, 1999
and Aram Sargsyan, who the President appointed a week later, but
fired on May 2, 2000.

In 1992, after Armenia’s independence, Margarian became a registered
member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), the first registered
party in the 3rd Republic of Armenia.

He influenced the party platform with the ideology he expressed as a
member of the National United Party.

He served as the Republican Party’s Chairman of the Board from 1993
until his death.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
