AKHTAMAR CHURCH TO BE REOPENED TODAY

The Armenian Church of the Holy Cross on Akhtamar Island in Lake
Van will be opened in Turkey today. Turkey has invited 277 guests
from foreign countries to participate in the opening ceremony. To
avoid security problems the Governor of Van Ozdemir Chakajak has
undertaken high-level security measures. 1 000 policemen will guard
the opening ceremony. Chief of security services of Van Salih Kesmez
told reporters that the safety of the highway from the airport to
Akhtamar Island has been reinforced. "In case of necessity police
helicopters will render assistance from air," he said.
