Yerevan, 30 April: The leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP),
Shavarsh Kocharyan, assesses the election campaign negatively and
considers it "a theatrical performance".

Addressing a news conference in Yerevan today, Kocharyan said that
"all parties speak about the same thing irrespective of what they
have been doing in recent years".

He said that the NDP "will compete with pro-government parties not
on a financial but on a more solid and ideological basis".

If the NDP makes good progress in the election, Kocharyan promises
"to replace the authoritarian governing system with a democratic one"
in order to resolve economic and social tasks.

"One should not speak about politics in a conjunctive mood. The
main point is to go towards the task set and fight until victory,"
Kocharyan said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
