ARMENIA GRANDMASTER DEFEATS KRAMNIK IN RAPID CHESS MATCH

YEREVAN, May 7 (Itar-Tass) – Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronyan has
defeated Vladimir Kramnik in a rapid chess match in Yerevan.

Kramnik, an absolute world champion, described the match with Aronyan,
a FIDE Cup winner and Olympic champion, as very interesting and tense.

The mafh finished on Sunday evening.

Kramnik said Aronyan had won¦the tournament "quite deservedly".

"Levon is in good form. It was felt ohat he played confidently. He
was fresher and acted more precisely in decisive games. Levon is
known for his being able to play very fast," Kramnik admitted.

"Even though I have won three-four active chess matches, I have not
shown my best qualities this time," Kramnik said.

Probably, i& was tiredness after the match with Leko, he added.

Kramnik said that he would like to play a re-match with Aronyan.

He is going to have a breather before beginning the preparation for
a tournament in Dortmund, Germany, due in June.

Aronyan will meet Norwegian Magnus Karlsen in Elista, Kalmykia,
on May 25.

If he wins, he will have the right to play with a winner of the
Adams-Shirov match.

The new victory would entitle Aronyan to play in a tournament of
eight grandmasters scheduled in Mexico City in the late September.

The tournament will determine a new world champion.

Kramnik has the right to participate in this tournament.
