President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned on Monday that Iran would
retaliate with severity to any possible attack by the United States
over Tehran’s nuclear program.
"They (the Americans) understand that if they should make this
mistake, the retaliation of the Iranian people will be severe and they
will repent," he told reporters in Abu Dhabi.
Ahmadinejad is wrapping up a landmark two-day visit to the United Arab
Emirates, the first by an Iranian head of state to the US Gulf
ally. His visit follows a trip by US Vice President Dick Cheney who
warned that Washington would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear arms.
On Sunday, Ahmadinejad called for an end to the presence of US troops
in the Persian Gulf.
"We can turn the Persian Gulf into the center of peace and friendship
in cooperation with each other," President Ahmadinejad said in a
meeting with his UAE counterpart Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
"We all wish that foreign troops would leave the region and give a
chance to countries in the region to establish security in the region
themselves," Ahmadinejad added.
For his part, Sheikh Khalifa expressed his country’s strong desire to
develop ties with Tehran and called for the establishment of a joint
commission to expand ties between the two neighbors. He noted that he
strongly defended the UAE’s close ties with Iran during his meeting on
Thursday with US Vice President Dick Cheney, who is on a regional
tour.
The United Arab Emirates and the Islamic republic of Iran have agreed
to set up a joint ministerial committee. The committee is to be
co-chaired by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries.
Ahmadinejad will arrive in the sultanate of Oman Monday. A statement
issued by the Omani royal court said the Iranian president’s visit
takes place "within the framework of close cooperation between Oman
and Iran".
The visit will strengthen the historic ties of friendship between Oman
and Iran and will open new horizons for bilateral cooperation in
various areas in line with the interests of the two nations. During
the visit, the two sides will discuss the latest developments in the
region and the world.
Oman Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed will receive President Ahmadinejad and
the accompanying delegation upon arrival in the country.
