The department for adolescents was set up at the children’s
polyclinic of Stepanakert a year and a half ago by the decision of the
government. The pediatrician of the department Stella Hambartsumyan
says adolescents have a lot of problems with health, most often eye
problems, heart and artery problems, problems with spine, and nervous
and psychological problems.
"It is mainly the consequences of the war, fears and social
problems. But there are also problems due to the indifference of
teachers," Stella Hambartsumyan says.
The children’s policlinic used to provide services to children under
15, now also adolescents under 18.
"By the international standards, 18 years is still a child. Therefore
we decided to provide medical services to adolescents as well. We
provide prophylactic examination, diagnostics. Since at this age
the physiological state of children undergoes changes, they must
be under permanent observation. However, not everyone sees the
doctor, and we cannot prevent diseases in time, which gives rise to
complications. Therefore, we decided to set up a commission including
a surgeon, a neurologist, a psychotherapist, an ENT doctor, a dentist,
etc. We are supported by the NKR Ministry of Health and the schools. It
helps provide services in the early stage of disease and keep children
with chronic diseases under surveillance."
