YEREVAN, JUNE 19, NOYAN TAPAN. The Yerevan Mayor’s Office, jointly
with the RA Police and Ministry of Agriculture, has been undertaking
measures aimed against sale of foodstuffs made at open-air points of
sale since June 1. As Karen Gevorgian, Head of the Trade and Service
Department of the Mayor’s Office, said in his interview with a Noyan
Tapan correspondent, as a result of daily checkings in Yerevan, they
have already confiscated 12 ice-cream makers, 2 drinks machines,
and 2 Ghars barbeques.
In K. Gevorgian’s words, though a serious struggle is carrying on
against the street trade of foodstuffs, it is impossible to liquidate
it only by means of the Mayor’s Office. "There are many of these
devices in Yerevan, but they hide them during check-ups. Therefore, we
need assistance of prefectures in order to be able to struggle against
not only street trade, but also the sale of fast food as a result of
daily check-ups," K. Gevorgian said. In his words, citizens should
realize that foodstuffs sold on the street are potential health risks,
as they are sold in conditions not corresponding to sanitary norms.
The head of the department said that they are also going to
undertake measures against the sale of melons and water-melons on the
street. They have already warned the prefectures to provide places
for melon and water-melon sale in certains communities, especially
near residential houses.
