[Presenter] By law, the political parties running in the election race
[12 May Armenian parliamentary election] had the right to spend no more
than 60m drams [171,000 dollars] and the candidates running under the
first-past-the-post system 5m drams [14,000 dollars]. Who has spent
how much and on what? The Central Electoral Commission [CEC] discussed
today its findings on the declarations filed by the political parties
and the candidates running under the first-past-the-post system.

[Correspondent over video of a CEC meeting] So, all the parties running
in the election have spent a total of 400m drams [about 1.14m dollars].

The leader is the [governing] Republican Party [of Armenia] that spent
about 59m drams [about 169,000 dollars], the [pro-government] Armenian
Revolutionary Federation – Dashnaktsutyun is the second having spent
about 58.5m drams [about 167,000 dollars], the [opposition] Heritage
party is the third, it spent about 53.5m drams [about 153,000 dollars].

The spending of the [pro-government] Prosperous Armenia party, which
is the fourth, is significantly below that of the first three. This
party spent 46.742m drams [about 14,000 dollars].

The last in the list is the Christian Democratic Revival Party,
which spent only 50,000 drams [about 143 dollars].

Under the first-past-the-post system, all the candidates together
spent over 136m drams [about 390,000 dollars].

The CEC has taken into notice these results submitted by an oversight
service.

Incidentally, CEC Chairman Garegin Azaryan was not sitting in his chair
for the first time. He was sitting together with reporters. Azaryan
is on leave.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
