New US Charge D’Affaires In Armenia Will Arrive In Yerevan On July 1

NEW US CHARGE D’AFFAIRES IN ARMENIA WILL ARRIVE IN YEREVAN ON JULY 10

Regnum, Russia
June 27 2007

The newly appointed US Charge d’Affaires in Armenia Rudolf Perina
is expected to arrive in Yerevan on July 10, REGNUM is told at the
US embassy press office. Until the new charge d’affaires arrives in
Amrenia, Anthony Godfrey is supposed to be fulfilling the duties. As
the ambassador is not in Armenia now, his duties are temporarily
taken by the vice ambassador.

It is worth mentioning, Rudolf Perina was US co-chair of the OSCE
Minsk Group for Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement in 2001-2004. In
1993-1996 he was senior undersecretary of state for Europe and Canada;
in 1998-2001 US ambassador to Moldova.

Last September, US Ambassador John Evans was recalled, supposedly,
on the reason that he mentioned the word "genocide" speaking on
the events in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915. The US president proposed
Richard Hoagland to the post, but his candidature was turned down
by the Congress twice. In his speeches, Hoagland cast doubt on
effectiveness of recognizing the Armenian Genocide, which made the
influential Armenian lobby in the USA and some part of Armenian
society consider his candidature as inadmissible.
