HIS HOLINESS ARAM I AND PATRIARCH PAULOS CALL ON THE INTERNATIONAL
COMMUNITY
TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Upon the arrival of His Holiness Aram I to the Ethiopian capital of Addis
Ababa on July 11, he signed a Joint Declaration with the spiritual leader of
the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Abune Paulos, stressing the
importance of recognizing the first Genocide of the 20th century just as the
century’s last Genocide, the Rwandan Genocide, has been recognized by the
international community. They underlined the importance of struggling for
justice and human rights and the important role of churches in this respect.

The Armenian Pontiff’s visit to Ethiopia presented a unique opportunity to
discuss the violated rights of the Armenian nation on African soil,
particularly at such a period when the memories of the Rwandan Genocide are
still alive in people’s minds and the Genocide in Darfur is still ongoing in
Sudan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
